Bryan's Beach
Directly across the road from Ohiwa Ocean View Apartments, Bryan’s Beach offers stunning views of Whakaari (White Island) and Moutohorā (Whale Island). This beach is ideal for swimming, fishing, surfing, and sandcastle building. You’ll often find sand yachts gliding by and endangered birds nesting in protected areas.

Whakaari / White Island
Whakaari (White Island) is an active marine volcano rising 48 km offshore. Its 325-hectare surface is just the visible tip of a much larger underwater structure. The island is closed to the public due to ongoing volcanic activity, but fishing charters and scenic helicopter flights offer unforgettable views of this dramatic landmark.

Moutohora Island
Moutohorā (Whale Island) is a 1.43 km² wildlife sanctuary just 9 km from Whakatāne. Shaped by volcanic activity and erosion, it’s named for its whale-like profile. The island is predator-free and home to rare native species. Guided tours with approved operators offer the chance to explore its bush, beaches, and hot water springs.

Waiotahe Spit Scenic Beach Reserve (Te Ahiaua) - pipi beds
Just 3.7 km from Ohiwa Ocean View Apartments, Waiotahe Spit Scenic Reserve (Te Ahiaua) is a favourite for fishing, pipi gathering, and family swimming. The estuary and river mouth create a peaceful setting with excellent photo spots—especially at sunset. Waiotahe also connects to the Ōpōtiki cycle trail, leading into the Motu Trails network.

Waiotahe Awa (river) and Estuary
As you approach Ohiwa Ocean View Apartments, the road winds around the scenic Waiotahe River and estuary. This tranquil spot is ideal for kayaking, rafting, fishing, or setting a net. Take a swim, snap a photo, or simply sit by the awa and enjoy the peaceful surrounds.
Ōhiwa

Ohiwa | Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park Walk
Just 1 km from Ohiwa Ocean View Apartments is a 90-minute loop walk offering panoramic views of Ohiwa Harbour and Whakatāne. The trail passes two historic pā sites and a side track leads to a glow worm grotto. Great for families, the path winds through a working sheep farm.

Ōhiwa Harbour Boat Ramp
Located about 6 km from the apartments, this small boat ramp gives access to the calm waters of Ōhiwa Harbour. Ideal for launching kayaks, dinghies or small boats. Cruise the estuary or venture into the Pacific Ocean. Public toilets are available on-site.

Ōhiwa Harbour Heritage Trail
Enjoy a quiet hikoi (walk) on a series of self-guided trails around the harbour. Discover stories of Ohiwa’s people, landscapes and past. Pick up a trail map from the Whakatāne or Ōpōtiki i-SITE and explore at your own pace.
Ōpōtiki

Ōpōtiki Historic Sights
Ōpōtiki is rich in history, including the site of New Zealand’s only cavalry charge. Visit the Ōpōtiki Museum and Hiona St Stephen’s Church to see artefacts linked to Rev. Völkner. The nearby Shalfoon and Francis Museum offers a glimpse into New Zealand’s retail past.

Ōpōtiki Wharf & Boat Ramp
Situated 14 km from the apartments, the wharf offers a double boat ramp, fun river rope swing, and slide. This is where the Waioweka and Ōtara rivers meet the sea. A great spot for launching, fishing, or watching the tide roll in.

Hukutaia Domain
Located 8 km from Ōpōtiki, this 4.5-hectare reserve features walking trails through native bush. The domain was established to protect Taketakerau, a 2000-year-old pūriri tree sacred to local iwi. Spot birds, enjoy the bush, and take time to connect with this special place.

Ōpōtiki Golf Club
